　　Technology has revolutionized the way people communicate in both personal and professional lives, linking humans in a real-time network across the globe. However, some worries that technology has also changed communication in many ways, and some of them are not for the better. From an objective perspective, I believe the truth is to be found somewhere in-between.

　　Technology is an easy target to be blamed for having undermined people’s social abilities.  As people increasingly rely on typed words and stickers, their emotional sensitivity is decreasing.  Non-verbal expression of feelings cannot be learned behind the screen in the way from face-to-face communication.  However, for people who already suffer from social anxiety, the Internet is a safe barrier for them to function normally.  Behind that barrier, they are inclined to feel more comfortable saying what they want without the risk of embarrassment.  For them, it makes it easier to look at the screen than to look at someone in the eye.

　　Another point in dispute is that technology has affected the quality of communication with both positive and negative outcomes. It is also true that while technology is creating elaborate social networks online, it still unexpectedly is causing social isolation. In some cases, in-person contact is being replaced by online communication, which means strong social connections will be inevitably replaced with a larger number of much shallower connections, leading to situations where people may have large numbers of friends but few actual real-world companions. This can lead to depression and feelings of loneliness.

　　In conclusion, technology is neither good nor bad.  It depends on how we use it.  The problem is certainly not technology but the direction we have finally given to it.  I strongly believe that it is time for us to understand that the responsibility belongs exclusively to humans who have to acquire a social conscience, to keep the balance.
